The Virtual Clinic Project

Overview

The Health Outreach and Peer Education (H.O.P.E.) Centre is a community health clinic in Ho, Ghana. The clinic provides health services to its catchment areas, such as nutrition programs and sexual health clinics. The clinic is a partnership between the Ghana Health Service and GlobeMed at Northwestern University.

The 'virtual clinic' is a 3D model of the H.O.P.E. Centre. It was created so that anyone in the world may virtually explore the clinic and learn about the great work it does for its community.

Explore

The acronym H.O.P.E. stands for "Health, Outreach, and Peer Education," which describes the Centre's three main activities. The videos below take you into the rooms where each of these activities takes place.

How it's made

The dimensions of the exterior elevations and interior rooms of the clinic were recorded to the nearest inch using a ruler and a digital tape measure. Measurements and locations of furniture and appliances also were recorded. Videos and photographs where captured with a Flip Video camera.

The 3D model was then built using Google Sketchup.

The completed 3D model was placed in a Google Earth visualization.

Publication

The initial purpose of this project was to explore the role of 3D modeling in encouraging global engagement among college students. Upon completion of the 3D model, it became clear there were many more applications so we published a paper on it. Check it out.
